Born to Muslim parents who actually lived in Afghanistan, Madhubala had a strong loyalty to her father till her death in 1969. This strong affinity proved to handle during her acting tenure but never did she repent. Though her life was short, Madhubala made a sensation in the movie industry with her variety performances. Madhubala was born in 1933 in Delhi and christened Mumtaz Jahan Begum Dehlavi. But seldom do people know her but any other than her screen name. Her debut was at the age of nine and success followed quickly at 16 years of age with her stunning acting in the evergreen movie “Mahal”. While she acted against one of the most popular actor of those times, Ashok Kumar, Madhubala could carry off her role effectively and was critically acclaimed for enacting a tough and delicate role with finesse. Songs and scenes of this suspense film are still played and watched in many houses in India. Madhubala’s health was deteriorating after a few years into her acting career, due to heart ailment. But she kept on working for a long time and she always craved for better roles, fame and critical appreciation. As a matter of fact, she maintained secrecy on the news of her serious ailment until she was compelled to divulge it on the sets of a Hindi film. Even her closest co-stars were quite unaware that the spirited, enthusiastic Madhubala did not enjoy perfect health. When critics and media pitched that Madhubala’s beauty outmatched her talent, her co-workers disagreed firmly. Popular actor, Dilip Kumar who was thought to be in a relation with Madhubala, said that her talent wasn’t fully brought out. Dilip Kumar believed that she was the greatest performer ever. There was many pressure to save more money to support her poor family and this led to the choice of a lot of bad movies and roles in her career. But, her presence earned the ‘blockbuster’ tag for several classic films that are still played today, the most well known being Mughal-E-Azam. Madhubala never got to perform in a Hollywood venture although film maker Frank Capra tried his best to talk about such a chance with her. But she did achieve international fame with a Theatre Arts magazine article that called her World’s biggest star.
